As my parents were leaving me those last seven years of caregiving, I asked them, “How will I live to be 100, die in my sleep, and live forever with you in Heaven?”
Mother said, “Honeygirl,” as she glanced over to Dad, smiling, “You have to have someone to love…”. Dad leaned forward to grab his mug filled with a hot cup of Folgers coffee. “Honeygirl, you have to have something to do, too,” he said. Without skipping a beat, Mother gently nodded to Dad and reached for her freshly delivered fine china cup, saying, “Honeygirl, you also have to keep dreaming to give you something to look forward to.”
My name is Colleen, they call me Honeygirl. I went through this list over and over in my long days and nights, and without question, I knew I was going to live to be 100, die in my sleep, and live forever with them in Heaven.
Someone to love
Check. I am a Mother. Side by side, we have walked today for 26 years and 9 months, filled with a mother’s love at every step. Today is his birthday. I have someone to love.
Something to do
Check. We moved in three years ago, last February 19th. A year after my Dad passed. Dad went to heaven in 2022, and Mother in 2020. We spent seven years together, and I never left their side. They helped me with a business plan for my “something to do” while they were busy leaving me. They plotted the liquor license, named my imaginary social club, FROSTY’S Spirits & Social Club. Mother added the cautious tagline, “Drink Less, Taste More”.
We were busy night and day. Today, I am building that business plan. I have been open for two years now, since August 2nd. I have something to do.
Something to look forward to…
Check. Oh dear, oh dear, do we have something to look forward to! Hold on tight because this is going to be something good, I promise. I pinky promise we have something to look forward to!
